DWP Confirms Who Can Get 2025 Winter Fuel Payment

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the exact birthdate cut-off for the 2025 Winter Fuel Payment. After updates from Chancellor Rachel Reeves, millions of pensioners will receive between £200 and £300 to help cover heating bills during the winter months. Last year, changes caused confusion and many people missed out, but the rules are now clearer.

Who Can Get the Payment?

To qualify for the 2025 Winter Fuel Payment, you must have been born on or before 22 September 1959. This means you will be at least 66 years old during the qualifying week in September 2025. The payment is designed to help older people who usually have higher energy costs during winter.

More People Can Now Receive It

Around nine million people across the UK will get the payment this year. Unlike last year, even people earning more than £35,000 are eligible, although the extra money may be adjusted through taxes later. Most pensioners who receive a state pension or other qualifying benefits will automatically get the payment. Only those newly eligible or not on qualifying benefits may need to contact the DWP.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said the decision to restore the payment to more people is not due to political pressure. It is part of the government’s efforts to make sure older people have financial support during the cost-of-living crisis.

The DWP has updated its website with clear instructions on eligibility, payment dates, and how to claim if needed. If you already get a state pension or qualifying benefits, the payment will be sent automatically between November and December. If you are newly eligible or not on these benefits, you may need to contact the DWP to make sure you receive it.

How Much Will You Get?

The amount depends on your age and circumstances. People born between 23 September 1944 and 22 September 1959 will get between £200 and £250. Those born before 23 September 1944 may get up to £305. Payments are tax-free and will not affect other benefits.

What to Do If You Don’t Receive It

If you are eligible but do not get your payment by January 2026, you should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre. This payment is part of a bigger effort to help older people with living costs, alongside plans like raising the minimum wage and freezing fuel duty. It is meant to make winter more affordable and less stressful for pensioners across the UK. The DWP’s clear rules and automatic payment system aim to make sure older adults get the support they need without extra hassle, giving peace of mind during the colder months.
